Caring for your bag
All our bags are made from genuine leather and are designed to last for years to come. But like all things, to keep them looking beautiful, they need to be looked after properly.
Our leather
All our bags are made from British sourced, genuine leather. As a natural material, leather often ages over time and develops its own individual lovely look, known as its "patina".
We realise that bike bags need to be more hardwearing than a standard handbag. That's why we've taken particular care when choosing our leather to ensure that it can withstand a certain amount of wear and tear. Our bags are made from different leathers, depending upon the design and often the surplus leather available at the time. Some are more hardwearing than others. But all leather will change over time, particularly when regularly exposed to bright light, heat, oils in our skin and water. So follow our tips below and you can keep your bag looking beautiful for years to come!
Protection from rain!
We love our glorious British weather, but there will be times when your bag will get wet! Whilst the majority of our leathers are not the very absorbent type, we recommend the following steps to keep your bag protected:
- If your bag gets wet, dry it off as soon as possible with a dry cloth. Never dry it on a radiator or with a hairdryer!
- Regularly weatherproof your bag using Collonil Carbon Pro a high-performing spray to give long-lasting protection against dirt and moisture. Suitable for most leathers, all our bags are given an initial application of this before dispatch. Just cover up any buckles and hardware before doing so!
*Please note that this is not suitable for use on our pink Sidney or green Trinity - but their coatings naturally repel water anyway.
- If you love cycling in the rain or riding through puddles (or just want that extra protection for your bag) then we recommend purchasing one of our made-to-fit waterproof raincovers. Made specifically for each of our larger bags, the raincovers are made from silver reflective waterproof ripstop fabric - keeping your bag nice and dry, and you nice and safe at night!
general love & care
All of our bags come with a Pedal & Brass dust bag to keep your bag safely tucked away when it's not being used.
Try to avoid storing your bag in direct sunlight or near direct heat.
Wherever possible, keep your bag away from sharp or rough objects which might cause scratches or marks. But if you do scratch your bag, give it a little rub with your finger (often they rub out) and learn to love your bag for all its individuality!
* Please note our tan and navy Cavendish bags are the most beautiful full grain vegetable tanned leather but this does mean it's more prone to marks and water damage than some of the others. So please take extra special care to waterproof your tan Cavendish and protect it from scratches.
